SNIFFING BEHIND THE CISTERN

Sniffing Behind The Cistern is something of a punk legend in these parts and reaches us with alarming regularity, although more recently it has slowed down due to editor Paul’s involvement with his mini-comics, record and tape label and having taken over at the helm of UK zine directory, Bypass.

SBTC issue six chats with Helen Love, The Fish Brothers and Brighton's own Sex Love Buster Baby (their devilish drummer Stella Starr has her own fine comic zine, Lone Star.) Issue seven features all the usual smelly punk rock nonsense as well as hitting on Brighton's most famous bog-sized venue, the Free Butt, for an International Strike Force interview (those Slampt-heads should get a Band Most Often Interviewed by Fanzines award.)

Paul Cistern also has comic zines out, Fanzine Boy and Herman, featuring the 'inane matchstick drawings' at which he seems to excel. Fanzine Boy, a mini-comic, features matchstick pisstakes of an anorakked-up supergeek in hilarious band interview and fanzine convention scenarios and Herman is a similarly sad character feeling grumpy at bus queues and making futile efforts at making friends.

Paul Cistern now has a column in Slampt's fanzine Fast Connection and has also become editor of Bypass, the UK's biggest and best review zine, which is now sadly defunct. He also puts out his own tapes and singles, releases including Brucie Bonus and a Patrick Fitzgerald acoustic tape, and the first single has just emerged featuring various local bands including his own, Anal Beard.
